About the COPD category

#1

slp4COPD. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, and some forms of bronchiectasis. This disease is characterized by increasing breathlessness. Many people mistake their increased breathlessness and coughing as a normal part of aging.

COPD affects an estimated 24 million individuals in the U.S., and over half of them have symptoms of COPD and do not know it.

State Advocacy Captains are volunteers with COPD, caregivers, friends and family members or healthcare providers who have been trained by the COPD Foundation to serve as peer leaders. State Advocacy Captains promote the importance of becoming a COPD advocate, mentor fellow community members looking for advocacy information in their state and participate in online and in-person advocacy activities.
